Vol. 274 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Monaghan School.

55.

asked the Minister for Education when an extension to Magherarney primary school, Smithboro, County Monaghan, will be built to relieve the overcrowding problem.

Mr. R. Burke

Investigations are proceeding in my Department in relation to a proposal to extend Magherarney National School. When a decision has been taken as to the extent and the type of additional accommodation which is required, the planning and other arrangements will be proceeded with.

I cannot say at this stage when work on extending the school will start.

I would ask the Minister to give priority to this case. There is one classroom with more than 60 infant pupils who are taught by one teacher. I am sure the Minister would agree priority should be given in this matter.

Mr. R. Burke

That is a rather unusual position, particularly in view of the changes we have made in the ratio in July, 1973 and 1974. I wish to assure the Deputy that the inspector is looking into the matter.
