Vol. 275 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Defence Uniform.

14.

asked the Minister for Defence when a new Civil Defence uniform will be available.

I expect that initial supplies of a new improved type of Civil Defence uniform will become available within the next two or three months.

On a point of order I did not hear Question No. 11 being called or being answered. It is a simple, non-controversial question.

Does the Ceann Comhairle wish me to repeat the answer?

I do not think that should be necessary.

The Commanding Officer, Naval Service, who is the only officer of the Service who holds the rank of Captain, wears the insignia appropriate to that rank.

Arising out of the answer to Question No. 14, has the supply of these uniforms been much delayed?

From the information at my disposal it does not appear that there has been any great delay. I will not come down firmly on that because it is not stated that there was no delay. I will communicate with the Deputy if he wishes.

Is it the Minister's intention to make available this type of uniform to the proposed local Civil Defence force and can he tell us when it is the Government's intention to set up the local Civil Defence force?

I have already told the Deputy that that is a matter for the Minister for Justice. Therefore, he should address his question to my colleague.

The Minister knows nothing about it.

It was a gimmick for the headlines.

It is a matter for the Minister for Justice. What I know about it I am not bound to say here.

The Minister for Posts and Telegraphs could tell the Labour Party Conference.

(Interruptions.)

I think we are getting a kick in the transom from the Minister.
