Vol. 276 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

26.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the provision of a public telephone kiosk at Carney, Nenagh, County Tipperary.

27.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the provision of a public telephone kiosk in Riverstown village, Birr, County Offaly.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions 26 and 27 together.

The use made of the call office telephones in the sub-post offices at Carney and Riverstown village is not sufficient to warrant provision of a kiosk in either place at present.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is a sub-post office in Riverstown and it serves not alone Riverstown but Killeen and there is an urgent need to serve the twin villages in this area? I am not satisfied that the position is such that it is not warranted. Would the Parliamentary Secretary ask the Minister to have another look at it because the people in that area in emergencies have no way at night-time of contacting a doctor, a priest or any special service?

The information I have available is that the population within approximately a mile radius is 150 people and that there are four rented telephones, including two coin box lines in the shop of the licensed premises in the village.

I do not think a coin box in a licensed premises at 1 o'clock in the morning would suffice. A garda might not look too kindly on it. I am not talking about numbers.

The Deputy must ask a supplementary question.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary ask the Minister to have another look at it because I am not satisfied? There are 50 people concerned and it may seem a small amount to a Department official but that number in a small area is sufficient to warrant a telephone.

28.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the provision of a public telephone kiosk at Kilkeary, Nenagh, County Tipperary.

29.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the erection of a public telephone kiosk at Kilmurray Cross, Ballinagar, County Offaly.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to take Questions Nos. 28 and 29 together.

My Department are not at present providing kiosks in areas such as Kilkeary or Kilmurray Cross where there is no post office.

30.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone kiosk will be erected in Bohola, County Mayo.

It is planned to provide a telephone kiosk at Bohola early in 1975.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary, on behalf of the Minister, give me an assurance that this will take place early in 1975? Is he aware that this work was to be carried out in June, 1974?

I understand it will be provided early in the coming year.

31.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the urgent need for the provision of a public telephone kiosk at the junction of Oak Terrace and Church Road, Lisduggan, Waterford city; and if he will take immediate steps to ensure the provision of such a service.

There is already one kiosk in the Lisduggan area. The claims of this area to a second kiosk will be borne in mind when the siting of further kiosks for Waterford city is being considered.

32.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the location of the two telephone kiosks proposed for the Tolka Valley, Finglas area, Dublin.

The kiosks have been erected at Cloonlara Crescent and Glenties Park.

I think the Parliamentary Secretary for that information. Is it indicated in the brief if it is contemplated erecting any more in that area, which is a vast one?

I have no information on that.

33.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that a person (name supplied) in County Cork paid £73 some months ago in respect of a telephone connection; and if he will state when the connection will be made.

It is hoped to provide service for the person in question by the end of this week.
