Vol. 276 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Resignations.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice if the number of resignations from the Garda Síochána is increasing.

There has been a slight increase in the number of resignations from the force this year compared with the three previous years but the number in any year compared to the total intake is insignificant.

The Minister said there is a slight increase in the number of resignations this year. Is there any apparent reason for this?

There is no apparent reason. It is a figure that varies from time to time. The number leaving this year, for example, will be considerably lower than the number leaving in 1969 but somewhat more than in 1971.

Would the Minister not be sufficiently concerned to find out why there has been a slight increase, as he described it, in the resignations from the Garda Síochána?

I have no doubt that the reasons for the resignations are available but I have not that information here. The point is that the number of resignations is insignificant in comparison with the total intake.

If the Minister has not the information giving the reasons for these resignations and if they are available, could he let me have them?

Yes, if the Deputy wants them.

I should like to have them for my own information.
