Vol. 276 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Houses.

39.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government the number of houses Dublin Corporation propose to erect in the Coombe area, Dublin.

40.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government the number of families that will be displaced by the proposed developments in the Coombe area, Dublin.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 39 and 40 together.

The National Building Agency, at the request of Dublin Corporation, are preparing plans for a housing scheme in the Coombe-Newmarket area. I understand from the corporation that as these plans have not been finalised, they cannot yet say how many houses will be included in the scheme.

I am informed by the corporation that they expect that only a very small number of families will be displaced by their proposed housing developments in the Coombe areas. It is their general intention that housing development in the "Liberties" area, including the Coombe, will be on a scale sufficient to rehouse families at present resident in the area, who will be displaced by the corporation's statutory operations and who wish to be rehoused there.

(Dublin Central): Could the Minister give any indication of how high these flats will be?

I could not tell the Deputy exactly how high they will be but Dublin Corporation have been asked to comply with the regulation that no houses should be more than three storeys high unless the buildings beside them are higher, in which case they can keep the building line. In general they will not be more than three storeys high.

(Dublin Central): The Minister mentioned in his reply people who are displaced. Will he ensure that they will be rehoused in that particular part of old Dublin?

The corporation tell me they proposed to rehouse them in that area.
