Vol. 276 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary School.

89.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the condition of Skeheenarinky National School, County Tipperary; and the steps he intends to take to rectify the position.

Mr. Kenny

A contract was placed early this year for improvements to this school but despite being pressed to do so the contractor has not yet put the work in hands.

He has promised to start within the next week and if he does not alternative arrangements will be made to have the work done.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary state what is the actual reconstruction work laid out for the contractor?

Mr. Kenny

In June, 1970 the Department of Education sanctioned a grant towards the cost of (i) electric light installation (ii) improvements to floors and (iii) provision of wall blackboards. A specification for those works was prepared and given to the manager but he was not prepared to undertake the works and the Office of Public Works agreed to have them carried out on his behalf.

I am very thankful to the Parliamentary Secretary for his helpful reply. However, it has come to my notice also—through the parents' association—and I wonder if the Parliamentary Secretary is aware that the ceiling is in a desperate condition and is likely to fall in at any time. It is a plaster ceiling of a very light material and is in a desperately bad condition, including the front door. I understand that if the contractor was informed of this and it was included he would start immediately on the works.

Mr. Kenny

There is no mention of repair to the ceiling. But, if the Deputy would send me a letter as early as possible, I will have the matter investigated.

The Parliamentary Secretary will understand that pressures from the parents in this case are extremely important. They have held several meetings. They are a most unlikely group to protest or be antagonistic about the situation but they feel frustrated into this by the constant delays which have arisen. Could the Parliamentary Secretary accept my word now, have somebody from the Thurles office investigate the situation immediately and have the work carried out forthwith?

Mr. Kenny

That might mean that a new contract would have to be negotiated. I am not certain but I shall find out and communicate with the Deputy.

I understand that the parish priest is prepared to put in the new door himself but the ceiling is another matter.

Mr. Kenny

In the information I have no mention was made of the ceiling but I shall find out if it can be included.

This is a new condition that has arisen over the past couple of months.

Mr. Kenny

I shall inquire and let the Deputy know.
