Vol. 276 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nuclear Free Zones.

26.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will press at the United Nations, as an interim measure towards the prohibition of the use of nuclear weapons, for the immediate creation of nuclear free zones in various parts of the world.

Ireland has consistently supported the concept of nuclear free zones. During the current session of the United Nations General Assembly we supported resolutions advocating the establishment of a nuclear free zone in South Asia. We also voted in favour of a Nigerian resolution re-affirming previous General Assembly resolutions of 1961 and 1965 calling on all States to consider and respect Africa as a nuclear free zone. We supported a resolution commending the idea of the establishment of a nuclear free zone in the Middle East. In addition, in previous sessions we have given our support to resolutions welcoming the treaty of 1967 prohibiting nuclear weapons in Latin America.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state if Ireland was listed as a possible nuclear free zone because of the south-west prevailing winds when the resolution was first being considered?

I cannot tell the Deputy if that was so but I would guess the answer is "no". As Ireland is so small, the sense of designating it as a nuclear free zone and not anywhere else in Europe is not immediately apparent.
