Vol. 276 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Assembled Motor Cars.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the number of assembled motor cars imported during the 12 months ended 30th November, 1974; and the number assembled in the country during the same period or the nearest similar period for which records can be obtained.

The number of assembled motor cars imported during the 12 months ended 31st October, 1974, was 21,181. The number of motor cars assembled in the country during the 12 months ended 30th September, 1974, was 45,640. The periods mentioned are the latest for which the information is available.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary inform the House about the quota granted for the importation of cars, if it is adjustable, if it has been extended, if importers get extensions of this quota at will, or if there is any undertaking with regard to the numbers that must be assembled here?

I have not got that information. The only additional information I have, if it interests the Deputy, is to the effect that both figures I gave are substantially down on the figures for the preceding year.

That is hardly surprising.

The number imported is alarming.
