asked the Taoiseach if he will tabulate the recorded unit prices for each item included in the consumer price index at three-monthly intervals over the past five years.

The national average retail prices for certain food items are shown in the following statement in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November of each of the past five years. The average prices shown for a particular period are those used in the calculation of the consumer price index for that period. They are not strictly comparable to the extent that in some instances price quotations are not available from all centres at each quarterly inquiry. The differences are, however, minor in nature and are eliminated in the compilation of the consumer price index.

In the case of other items priced for the consumer price index no attempt is made to obtain quotations for an identical quality, variety and quantity of the different articles in all areas and, therefore, any average price computed from these data would not be meaningful. The correctness of the relative change required for the index calculations is ensured by the fact that at each source the identical article is priced at successive quarters.
