asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce why the price of butter has been increased; when the application, if any, was lodged with the National Prices Commission; and when the decision was sanctioned.
Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Butter and Margarine Prices.
The retail price of butter has been increased by 4p per lb to take account of the termination of the Exchequer consumer subsidy of £80.45 per ton hitherto paid by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. The proposed increase was noted by the National Prices Commission on 3rd December, 1974. I approved the increase on 9th December, 1974 with effect from 12th December, 1974.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the controlled price per pound of butter and margarine in this country and in Britain; and if he will consider introducing a system similar to that in operation in Britain to reduce the price of butter substantially.
As the information requested by the Deputy in relation to the prices of butter and margarine in this country and in Britain is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have copies circulated with the Official Report. There are fixed maximum prices for butter and margarine in this country while prices for these products are not fixed in Britain.
The question of introducing a system similar to that operating in Britain is a matter primarily for the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.
