Vol. 277 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Director of Public Prosecutions.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons, male and female, who applied for the position of Director of Public Prosecutions.

The committee established under section 2 (7) (a) of the Prosecution of Offences Act, 1974, to select candidates for appointment to the office of Director of Public Prosecutions are not required to give me the information sought by the Deputy and I have no function in relation to applications for that post.

As the Deputy is, no doubt, aware the Government have appointed Mr. Eamonn M. Barnes, Legal Assistant, Office of the Attorney General, to be the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Will the Taoiseach tell the House if there were any female applicants for the position of Director of Public Prosecutions? What is preventing him from giving information to the House with regard to the number of applicants?

The committee established are not required to furnish details of the number of applicants or whether there were any female applicants.

Were there other applicants?

I understand there were.

Although the Taoiseach has stated that the committee have no obligation to give information, will he say how many applicants there were for the post of Director of Public Prosecutions?

I do not know. I have no information on it.
