Vol. 277 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fertiliser Exports.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the quantities of nitrogen and nitrogenous fertilisers that were exported during the past 12 months.

In the 12 months ended November, 1974, 218 tonnes of nitrogen and 9,879 tonnes of nitrogenous fertilisers were exported.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that farmers cannot get nitrogen although we are exporting it in huge quantities? Surely the Parliamentary Secretary must realise that this is completely contrary to the advice given by the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries?

I suggest that the Deputy put down a separate question to the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.

I have asked a question. We are continuing to export a vital commodity so far as the farmers are concerned——

That is a matter for the Minister responsible. I am calling Question No. 6.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary telling us that the Government have nothing to do with the export of this necessary commodity?

Of course I am not saying that.

What is the Parliamentary Secretary saying?

I am saying that my function is to give the figure, as the Deputy well knows.

Surely the Government should take some action regarding the export of this necessary commodity. Do they intend to take any action or will we get the reply I got with regard to animal feeding stuffs, that the Government are powerless to take action?

That question is one for the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that we are in the ludicrous situation where we are importing the same product that we are exporting?

I have called Question No. 6.
