Vol. 277 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deer Treatment.

17.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has any evidence to indicate that as a result of the high prices available for venison an increase in the incidence of deer poaching by well organised, often motorised, gangs using shotguns and dogs has taken place, in which deer have been killed by the use of vehicle headlights, by having their necks broken or their throats cut or even beaten to death; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

(Cavan): The information available to me does not indicate that the situation is as stated in the question. However, I am aware that some isolated incidents involving improper treatment of deer have taken place and I deplore these occurrences. New legislation, under which protection of deer for the first time is envisaged will, I hope, go a long way towards eliminating such incidents.

Will that be the Wild Life Bill or a different one?

(Cavan): That is the Wild Life Bill.
