Vol. 277 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Industrialisation.

41.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the IDA have any plans to provide more industry at Westport, County Mayo, in the near future.

I have been informed by the Industrial Development Authority that the planning of a 20,000 sq. ft. advance factory for Westport is proceeding and that, subject to planning permission being obtained, work is expected to commence on the construction of the factory in May, 1975.

The authority are making every effort to attract industry to Westport.

Is the Minister aware that there are two industries in Westport, one manufacturing textiles but which has had to put its workers on a three-day week and the other a shoe factory? Because of the unstable position of industries of this nature, would the Minister not agree that the situation in this town is urgent in so far as employment is concerned?

I agree. As the Deputy must be aware, there has been what one might refer to as a disappointment of legitimate hopes in Westport. Had those hopes been fulfilled, present circumstances would be better. We recognise that these legitimate hopes were disappointing and the pushing forward with the 20,000 sq. ft. factory is an indication of that recognition. The IDA, because of the circumstances, regard Westport as a high priority area.

Would the Minister not agree that it would be a good idea to help the factories that are there to continue in existence rather than to be talking of providing one with a doubtful future?
