Vol. 277 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trading Stamps.

57.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when he proposes to introduce legislation to control or outlaw trading stamps.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has completed his examination of the general question of stamp trading in the light of the views of the National Prices Commission, the Restrictive Practices Commission and of many firms and individuals; and if he will give an assurance that several hundred people employed in a trading stamp company in South-West Dublin and the thousands of others indirectly employed will not be adversely affected by his decision.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 57 and 58 together.

I have already announced, following an examination of this question, that my intention is to regulate but not to prohibit stamp trading. I hope to do this later this year in conjunction with other consumer protection measures. I see no reason why this approach should adversely affect employment in or related to the business.
