Vol. 277 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Hide Prices.

66.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the very low price being paid for cattle hides; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that current prices for cattle hides are lower than they have been for some years. I have no influence over these prices, which are governed by the ordinary forces of the market. Prices for cattle hides in Ireland are, I understand, ordinarily related to the prices paid in British hide markets, which have been in a depressed state recently with supply exceeding demand.

Would the Minister agree that the greatest possible contribution he could make towards improving the prices paid for cattle hides would be the final and ultimate eradication of the warble fly?

I am quite happy to agree to that, but that is a matter for the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.

Collective responsibility. Get on with it.

I will communicate the Deputy's view to the Minister concerned.
