Vol. 277 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Steel Production.

65.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total tonnage of steel produced and dispatched by Irish Steel for the years 1972, 1973 and 1974.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Year

Products made from Crude Steel

Galvanised sheet made from imported black sheet

Crude Steel

Semi-finished Steel (billets)

Finished Steel (Sections and bars)

1972

86,070

7,680

68,852

26,034

1973

115,726

9,284

81,851

35,673

1974

110,144

15,728

78,207

17,063

Is it going up or going down?

There was quite a significant rise in 1973 over 1972. In 1974 there was a decline, but not an enormous one. It fell from 115,000 roughly to 110,000 odd.

It is going down in proportion to the decline in the building industry.
