Vol. 277 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Television Reception.

12.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will list the areas at present being served by the 405-line television system.

13.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs his proposals to ensure television reception by persons now receiving 405-line transmission on the termination of this line system.

14.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the proposals he has to ensure television reception for licence holders in the Laragh, Glendalough, Glenmalure, Greenane, Ballinaclash, Avoca and Glenealy areas of County Wicklow from 31st December, 1975, when the 405-line system will terminate.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 12, 13 and 14 together.

The only areas where RTE transmissions are available on the 405-line standard only are parts of counties Donegal and Monaghan. The 405-line service there will not be ceased until after a 625-line service has been provided, probably in 1977.

Elsewhere the television line standard used by RTE is 625 lines but a duplicate service on 405 lines is also broadcast from transmitters at Kippure, which serves most of Leinster, including the areas mentioned specifically by the Deputy, and parts of Cavan and Monaghan and Truskmore, which serves north Connacht and parts of Donegal, Longford and Cavan, and from a low powered transposer at Donnybrook. RTE expect to cease the duplicate 405-line transmissions from Kippure and Truskmore in about 12 months' time and from Donnybrook towards the middle of 1976.
