Vol. 277 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Technical School.

77.

asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in opening the new technical school at Falcarragh, County Donegal; and why alternative accommodation has not been provided for the students in the meantime.

The delay in opening the new community school at Falcarragh was due to the contractors not completing the building in accordance with time-scales agreed with them. The students entered into occupation of the building on 3rd February.

My Department's information is that alternative accommodation was available. The school reopened for examination classes on the scheduled date—20th January, 1975—and for non-examination classes on 29th January, 1975. The decision to defer the date of opening for non-examination classes was taken by the board of management of the school.

I did not ask the Minister about delay in finishing the school. My question was about the delay in the occupation of the school. I should like to ask the Parliamentary Secretary if he is aware that my information is that the alternative accommodation which the pupils have in another school in the area was not paid for by the Department and they objected to the students occupying that after the holidays?

I understand that all classes are now taking place in accommodation which is available. It may not be the most desirable possible accommodation but it is accommodation.

Have they occupied the alternative accommodation?

They have occupied accommodation which is sufficing.
