Vol. 278 No. 4

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Safety Regulations.

33.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will initiate legislation to update industrial safety regulations; and, if so, when.

I have had a review of the industrial safety law incorporated in the Factories Act, 1955, carried out by a working group in my Department. The recommendations of the working group will reach me very shortly and I will then decide whether new legislation is necessary in this area.

In practical terms the detailed safety requirements are laid down in regulations made under the enabling powers of the primary legislation. The revision and updating of these regulations in the light of changes in production processes and modern technology is a continuing process. Since coming to office I have made 19 sets of regulations. I have published notice of my intention to make three further sets. Various other proposals are being investigated by my Department as part of a continuing programme of statutory regulations directed towards improving the working environment.
