Vol. 279 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Architectural Monuments.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government if An Foras Forbartha have commenced the compilation of an inventory of the best architectural monuments in this country's heritage.

Work on the compilation of local inventories was undertaken by An Foras Forbartha as part of the amenity advisory service available to contributing planning authorities. I understand that it is hoped to build up a national inventory in due course.

Would the Minister have any idea when this will be published?

I would not. The arrangement was originally made as far back as 1963 and in 1972 the scheme was commenced. It was decided in 1963 to do it and in 1972 it was commenced. I hope it will be completed within a relatively short time. There are three different headings and under the first heading—archaeological inventory—there are 18 counties completed. They are done on a county-to-county basis. Under the second heading—historical and architectural inventory—there are 22 counties completed and under the industrial archaelogical inventory there are only eight completed. I would assume that perhaps by the end of this year we will be getting close to preparation to publish it.

I hope so.
