Vol. 279 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicle Legislation.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has implemented any of the EEC proposals involving signalling equipment, electrical points for trailers, interior fittings, safety belts and anti-theft devices.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the directives concerning the harmonisation of national legislation on motor vehicles, rear-view mirrors, the field of vision and windscreen wipers on tractors, motor vehicle feet and external projections of motor vehicles will be implemented in the near future.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 18 together.

I take it that the questions refer to the series of EEC directives towards the elimination of technical barriers to trade in relation to motor vehicles and their parts. While general responsibility in relation to such directives rests with the Minister for Industry and Commerce, my Department are concerned to ensure that the provisions of statutory regulations under the Road Traffic Acts are brought into harmony with these directives where appropriate and this will be done.

Has the Minister any proposal to make regulations in relation to these directives in the near future?

No. it is not exactly a matter for my Department, but the Deputy can be assured that as soon as it becomes my job to do it I will do it.
