Vol. 279 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Live Animal Smuggling.

22.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will introduce a scheme similar to that operated by the US Bureau of Customs whereby the Government will pay liberal rewards for information leading to the arrest of persons engaged in smuggling live animals; and if he will urge animal dealers and importers to report such information as a matter of self-protection.

The Revenue Commissioners operate a system of rewards for information relating to the illegal importation of goods, including live animals. There is no information at my disposal which would indicate that smuggling of live animals is prevalent but I would, of course, urge persons having knowledge of any such activity to report it to the nearest Customs office.
