Vol. 279 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waste Oil Collection.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will circulate by way of public advertisement the names of all companies who are prepared to collect waste oil free of charge.

As I stated in reply to a question on 13th February, consideration is being given to the measures that may be necessary to give effect to the EEC directive on waste oil disposal. It would not be appropriate for me to advertise publicly the names of companies prepared to collect waste oil.

I have raised this on previous occasions and inquiries I have made since indicate to me that there are such companies but that people who have waste oil to dispose of here in Dublin, and who dispose of it in some of the tributaries of the Liffey, do not know where to get in touch with the disposal companies.

The public Press is always glad to get advertisements. Deputy Lemass asked questions on 28th June, 1973, 9th July, 1973 and 14th May, 1974. The position is that so far as I am aware there are two companies in Dublin and one of them has written to us asking us to notify local authorities that they collect waste oil. They could easily notify the local authorities themselves. I do not think it should be the job of the Department to tell any local authority that a certain company will do a job for them. That is a matter for the people concerned.

I am talking about the matter of conservation; I am not trying to help a company to do its business. If this service is available, surely any Minister interested in conservation should make every effort to ensure that the service is used to the full?

Deputy Lemass is getting ridiculous if he is suggesting that I should advertise for one of two companies offering a service to local authorities or to the public.

Both.

Question No. 21 postponed.
