Vol. 279 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scallop Fishing.

30.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he now considers it appropriate to introduce regulations regarding fishing for scallops on the western side of the Irish Sea.

The answer is "No".

Can the Parliamentary Secretary give an assurance that there is no danger of scallops being overfished to the detriment of the trade in the future?

I can give that assurance. We have got an agreement from the fishermen concerned that they will not overfish the scallops and we are satisfied that they are honouring that agreement so there is no need to provide a bye-law.

A bye-law is already in existence in West Cork.

The Deputy should be careful if he wants to keep himself in existence in West Cork.
