Vol. 279 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Industrial Policy.

1.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in relation to the EEC desire for the modernisation of certain sectors such as the ship-building industry and the pulp and paper industry, both of which have structural problems, and with a view to the harmonising of national policies, he will state if the English decisions to protect employment by delaying the rationalisation of the iron and steel industries in the UK will have an adverse effect on this desirable policy.

It would not be appropriate for me to comment on what the Deputy states to be British policy in regard to the rationalisation of the UK iron and steel industries. I do not propose to speculate on what effect such a policy might have on any EEC policy on the modernisation of other sectors of industry, but I do not see any obvious connection between the two.
