Vol. 279 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Paraquat Additive.

12.

asked the Minister for Health if any recommendations have been made by his Department to the manufacturers of paraquat regarding the addition of a foul-smelling, foul-tasting substance to lessen the dangers of the accidental ingestion of this poison.

I am happy to tell the Deputy that "gramoxone"—the high paraquat concentration to which I presume his question refers—is being marketed now only in a "stench-added" formulation.

Is the Minister now satisfied that adequate controls are in existence for the protection of those using gramoxone?

Yes. I might also inform the Deputy that efforts are being made by the manufacturers and distributors to call in the unstenched paraquat.
