Vol. 279 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tallaght Speed Limit.

7.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider introducing a speed limit in the Tallaght area, County Dublin, to cater specially for Old Bawn Road.

A speed limit of 30 mph is already in operation on the major portion of the Old Bawn Road. The process of reviewing the speed limit on any particular road is now a matter for the local authority. Any representations which the Deputy may wish to make in the matter therefore might be directed to Dublin County Council. Again, I now have no say in this matter.

Is it not a fact that the Minister must sanction the recommendations of the local authority in matters such as this, in other words, in making a speed limit for a certain road? If so, would he be prepared to sanction a speed limit of 25 miles per hour, particularly on the Old Bawn Road but also in the new town of Tallaght, if such were recommended by the local authority?

Any recommendation made to me on speed limits from local authorities will be sanctioned by me. That is the reason I gave them the authorities to make such recommendations, or to take the matter up themselves. I consider that to be a far more sensible arrangement than having somebody in the Custom House waiting for a considerable length.

I take it that the Minister is saying he would in fact sanction a 25 miles per hour limit.

If the local authority make a recommendation to me I will be prepared to sanction it.
