Vol. 279 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - TV Reception.

56.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is taking any steps to enable all the people of Glengarriff, County Cork to receive good quality TV reception.

I understand that, with the exception of a small pocket containing about eight houses, reception in Glengarriff is satisfactory. RTE say that the nature of the terrain is such that there are economic and practical limitations on what can be done to improve reception in this small pocket. However, if the Deputy will furnish the names and addresses of those people who are complaining about their reception RTE will be pleased to investigate each individual complaint with a view to effecting some improvements.

57.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the very poor television reception in the Nire Valley area, County Waterford; and if he has any proposals to improve reception there.

There has been no change since I replied to a similar question by the Deputy on 30th May, 1974; RTE have no plans for the improvement of television reception in the Nire Valley area in the near future.

This is very unsatisfactory as far as the people of the Nire Valley are concerned and I have been taken aback by hearing the Minister say that RTE have no plans to bring about an improvement in reception in that area, which is deplorable at the present time.

RTE are concentrating on improving reception in the more populous areas where it is below average at present, under a major four- to five-year programme of improving reception. I am afraid I have sympathy for people who are having bad reception in the Nire Valley but it is clear from the very small pocket involved that it must come relatively low down on the priority list.
