Vol. 279 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gortdrum Mines.

59.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that Gortdrum mines are closing; and if he is satisfied that there is need for such closure.

When it commenced production in mid-1967 this mine was projected, on the basis of the indicated reserves and proposed production rates, to last until mid-1975. This was the basis on which the State mining lease was issued to the company in question. I understand that the mine closure this year, in accordance with the original programme, is unavoidable. I have directed the Industrial Development Authority to make every effort to provide alternative job opportunities for the men who will become redundant.
