Vol. 279 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilkenny Factory Closure.

63.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any proposals exist for the re-employment of workers in a factory (name supplied) in Kilkenny who will become unemployed by the closure of the company.

The Industrial Development Authority have contacted a number of firms who may be interested in taking over the factory or employing the labour force. Every effort is being made and will be made to find a suitable replacement industry.

Could I ask the Minister if the contacts that have already been made have produced encouraging results? The workers, naturally, are very interested in the possibility of the plant being taken over as a going concern.

I am afraid, while I appreciate the Deputy's concern and the workers' concern, that I cannot give any real information as to the probable outcome of the contacts.

There are nibbles?

There are nibbles, certainly, but it is a bad thing often to raise hopes that are dashed. I cannot give any positive information.

I thank the Minister.
