Vol. 279 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Research Maintenance Allowance.

77.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received a request that the maintenance allowance paid to those training in research in pure science at the Department of Chemistry, University College, Galway, be related to the national wages agreement and to the Consumer Price Index; and if so, if he will make a statement in the matter.

I have received such a request. The maintenance allowances in question for the academic year 1974-75 have been fixed at £450 for the first year of award and £500 for renewals, in the second and third years. No increase on these rates for 1974-75 is contemplated.

The question of the rates to be applied in 1975-76 is under consideration at present and a decision will be notified to the university authorities as soon as possible.

Would the Minister notify me as well when a decision is arrived at?

Certainly, I will ask the Minister to do so.
