Vol. 279 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - PAYE Yield.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give an estimate of the extra amount of PAYE tax as a result of the new national pay agreement.

Mr. Kenny

Statistics are not available which would enable the information sought by the Deputy to be given. However, the net receipt of income tax under PAYE in the calendar year 1974 was £171 million. As a consequence of the carry-over effect into 1975 of the terms of the national pay agreement, 1974, income increases related to grade, anomalies and other claims and the likely pattern of increases in empolyee remuneration if the terms of the proposed national pay agreement are implemented, it is estimated that the 1975 tax revenue under PAYE will be £266 million.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary give me a breakdown as to what proportion of that would be attributable to the new national pay agreement?

Mr. Kenny

No. I do not have that figure.

That is really the question I am asking.

Mr. Kenny

If the Deputy wishes, I will ask the Minister to supply him with a figure, if that is possible. I have not got it here.

The important point that I am trying to expose is that the tax-free allowance is eroded immediately the national pay agreement is fixed.

Mr. Kenny

That will be clarified when the Deputy gets the figures from the Minister's Department.
