Vol. 279 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Letter Deliveries.

7.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a registered letter containing postal orders for £15 originally posted in November, 1974, (details supplied) has not yet been delivered at Kerala, South India; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The registered letter was delivered but the Indian Post Office refused to cash the postal orders on the grounds that the date stamp impressions on them were indistinct. The postal orders were returned to the sender who asked my Department to send the payee an international money order instead. There was, regrettably, considerable delay in complying with this request but the necessary instructions were sent by airmail to the Indian Post Office on the 24th March, 1975.

Is the Minister aware that up to Friday of last week this money had not been delivered?

I am aware that instructions were sent by airmail to the Indian Post Office on 24th March. That is the last information I have about the matter but if the Deputy has information that it has not been received I shall have the matter looked into. I might add that it is my view that this matter was mishandled and I am taking steps in connection with this matter.

8.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the very long delay in the delivery of letters between Dublin and Kerry.

Letters between Dublin and Kerry posted before the appropriate latest posting times in the evening are normally delivered by first post on the following working day. Letters posted after those times are normally delivered by second post on the following working day where provided, otherwise by first post on the next following working day. If the Deputy can furnish details of particular cases in which delays appear to have occurred, I will have them specially investigated.
