The appointment was terminated on health grounds.
Is the Minister aware that independent medical opinion given in relation to this man's health suggests he is in a satisfactory healthy condition for the duties of a postman? The gentleman concerned disputed the decision given which resulted in the termination of his employment some months ago and he has since been unemployed.
The person in question indicated his willingness to be examined by any doctor nominated by the Department. A special examination by a departmental medical officer in Galway was arranged for him and, on the basis of that medical report and in the light of the officer's absences from duty, it was recommended that his appeal be refused.
Is the Minister aware that the Department of Posts and Telegraphs have offered work to this man on a temporary basis if he wishes to apply for it? Would the Minister not agree that in such circumstances there seems to be a conflict on the interpretation being put on the health report?
I am not aware of the circumstance referred to by the Deputy but if he will furnish me with information on this matter I will have it looked into.
I refer the Minister to a letter of 20th December, 1974, from the postmaster in Galway who stated that if he wished to be considered for temporary work in the Department he should register with the National Manpower Services.
