Vol. 280 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Houses.

40.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the provision of new housing in the Dublin 8 area.

The National Building Agency, at the request of Dublin Corporation are preparing a scheme for about 150 dwellings at New-market/The Coombe. It is hoped that work will be commenced before the end of the year on the first stage of this scheme, comprising 34 dwellings. The agency have also been asked by Dublin Corporation to redevelop a site at New Street/Clanbrassil Street Lower for housing purposes. The acquisition of further sites in the Dublin 8 area is proposed by the corporation.

(Dublin Central): Can the Minister give any indication of what type of housing the National Building Agency intend to build? Will it be high rise houses?

No. The Deputy can be assured there will be no high rise houses built in Dublin or anywhere else in the country. We had one example of that and we will not have any more.

(Dublin Central): Can the Minister say when those houses will be completed?

I would not be able to say but as the Deputy is aware, in 1973 I arranged for the appointment of a housing co-ordinator for the Dublin area and I think the Deputy will admit that he is doing very well in acquiring sites. In January, 1974, Dublin Corporation adopted a recommendation to redress the imbalance created by the people who left the city centre and for that reason they are now going ahead with plans to try to get the first of them started. The Deputy can be assured that I am as anxious as he is to see proper dwellings in the centre of Dublin.
