Vol. 280 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork School.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is expected that work will commence on the building of Passage West Boy's national school, County Cork; and when it will be ready for occupation.

Mr. Kenny

It is hoped that the contractor will commence work on the erection of this school in about two weeks. The building should be ready for occupation in about twelve months.

Is there any significance in the long delay that has taken place since the tender was advertised and the contractor appointed until two weeks' time when work will commence?

Mr. Kenny

The tender was accepted on 19th March, 1975, for the erection of a new national school for boys at Passage West. The contractors have stated they will commence work in a fortnight. The school will contain five classrooms and a general purpose room. Because of the steep gradient of the site, portion of the building will be a two-storey block and the remainder will be a single-storey block. There have been many representations about this school. This is the information I have. There have been a number of one day strikes or token strikes by the parents about providing this school, but there is nothing here as far as I can find about the delay.

The Parliamentary Secretary mentioned a date when the contract was placed——

Mr. Kenny

Was accepted.

Yes—has he on the file the date when the tenders were sought and the advertisement placed?

Mr. Kenny

If that information is on the file I have not got it here with me, but I will give it to the Deputy as soon as I get it.

I would draw attention to the fact that there was considerable delay between that and 19th March.

Mr. Kenny

The Deputy knows the time. Why does he not tell me?

I have not got it with me and I should not like to give incorrect information, but there was a long timelag.

Mr. Kenny

We will find out.
