Vol. 281 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ban-Ghardaí Pay and Promotion

18.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the fact that this year is International Women's Year, he will ensure that equal opportunities for pay and for promotion above the rank of sergeant will be granted to Ban-Ghardaí; and whether they will in future be permitted to join the detective branch.

(Cavan): Discussions with the Garda Representative Bodies on claims for the application to the Garda Síochána of the principle of equal pay for men and women doing the same or similar work or work of equal value are in progress under the Garda Síochána conciliation and arbitration scheme.

Having regard to the nature of many of the duties that gardaí are called on to perform, the question of affording to women within the Force equality of opportunity in regard to the assignment of duties and the related matter of promotion is a complex one, which is being examined in consultation with the Commissioner.

Could the Minister give an assurance that in this International Women's Year we will get a decision on this matter before the year expires?

(Cavan): I will convey that request to the Minister.
