Vol. 281 No. 7

Ceiseanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas Scheme.

8.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries why the electoral areas of Knockgloss and Kilgobbin, Camp, Tralee, County Kerry, were not included in the disadvantaged areas.

As part of County Kerry, these areas are included among those designated as disadvantaged for the purposes of the EEC directive. They are not at present included in the published list of the more severely handicapped areas where the livestock headage payments under the directive are intended to apply. Following representations which I have received from the Parliamentary Secretary, Deputy Begley, I am having these particular areas re-examined to see if they might reasonably be regarded as homogeneous with the rest of the Dingle peninsula.

Can we take it from the reports in this morning's papers that the western counties are now designated areas?

That is an extension of the question. It would not be in order to extend the subject matter of the question.

I expected that.

I merely applied the rules in this House.

Very fairly.

Very fairly, and that is the way it will remain.

Following the report from An Foras Talúntais, does the Minister now intend to have another look at the disadvantaged areas scheme?

There is nothing in this question about An Foras Talúntais.

The disadvantaged areas?

The question refers to County Kerry. I cannot allow an extension of that question.

On a point of order, surely the Deputy's supplementary was a valid one? He asked if a recent report would have any bearing on the disadvantaged areas scheme. Surely that is a valid supplementary?

No. The question refers to County Kerry.

My question arose out of a recent publication by An Foras Talúntais which classified different areas. Will the Minister have another look at the disadvantaged areas scheme?

The Deputy had better put down a question along those lines. This question refers to County Kerry.
