Vol. 282 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Baler Twine Price.

10.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will take steps to control the price to farmers of baler twine because of the great variation in retail prices.

Normally, there are some variations in the retail prices of baler twine because the discounts obtained by traders will vary depending mainly on the time of purchase and the quantity purchased. The variations this year are greater than usual because some traders are carrying stocks purchased last year at the lower prices then prevailing which they were unable to dispose of in 1974 owing to the sharp drop in demand resulting from the poor harvest. As these exceptional variations in prices are likely to disappear when the old stocks have been disposed of, I do not propose to introduce measures to control the price of baler twine at retail level.
