asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will organise summer courses for children in the field of consumer education.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumer Education Courses.
Consumer education for children is a vital part of the consumer protection programme. The National Consumer Advisory Council, in their report published in January, recommend that the Department of Education should include consumer information and education in schools curricula. A good deal of this kind of training is already included in courses in schools, but I hope to pursue the question of how much more can be done—either during school terms or during vacations. Incidentally, youth groups could, I believe, do a great deal in this field within their existing educational programmes. I would hope that there could be some discussion on this. Priority must, however, be given to the preparation of new consumer protection legislation.
