Vol. 282 No. 6

Excess Vote, 1972-73. - Vote 16: Law Charges.

Cavan): I move:

That a sum not exceeding £879,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1975, for the salaries and expenses of the Office of the Attorney General, etc., and for the expenses of criminal prosecutions and other law charges.

Basically, what is covered in this?

(Cavan): Counsels' fees, et cetera.

Free legal aid?

(Cavan): No, the State free legal aid is not included.

What would free legal aid come under?

(Cavan): Under the Justice Vote.

On a matter of accounting, under which Department does Law Charges come at the moment?

(Cavan): It is under the Attorney General's Department.

Will there be a change in view of the appointment of a Director of Public Prosecutions?

(Cavan): There is a separate Vote being moved today for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Presumably a great deal of what heretofore appeared under Law Charges will appear under the heading of the Director of Public Prosecutions in future and this Vote will contain only fees in respect of civil cases?

(Cavan): A great deal of this will appear under the Vote for the Director of Public Prosecutions in future.

Vote put and agreed to.
