Vol. 282 No. 6

Excess Vote, 1972-73. - Vote 15: Agricultural Grants.

Cavan): I move:

That a sum not exceeding £30,220,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1975, for grants to Local Authorities in relief of rates on agricultural land.

Can the Minister throw a little more light on what this is? Is there any payment from the EEC by way of reimbursement?

(Cavan): I am informed that there is not.

What is it?

Does this include relief?

(Cavan): From rates?

(Cavan): It does.

I should like to take this opportunity to protest at the fact that the Estimate for the Department of Agriculture has not come before the House since I became a Member two and a half years ago. I was ashamed, agriculture being such an important matter, that we have no time to discuss the Estimate. I understand that the Estimate now before the House deals with relief of rates.

(Cavan): That is what it deals with. The point Deputy Callanan is making would more properly be made on the Vote for Agriculture.

It will be coming up today?

Vote put and agreed to.
