Vol. 282 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Road Works.

6.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ascertain from Kerry County Council when widening operations will be carried out on the Killorglin/Milltown road.

The timing of improvement works on this national secondary road will depend on the availability of funds for the improvement of that class of road and of the relative priority of works on the various roads concerned.

Is the Minister aware that we have some heavy industry along that road and it is causing a lot of traffic jams? It is a very dangerous road. It is narrow with bad turns. Would the Minister try to get it into a priority position and make funds available?

Putting it into a priority position would, in the first instance, be a matter for Kerry County Council. As the Deputy is aware, I have agreed since 1974 to give grants annually for national secondary road improvements. There were no such grants previously. But unless Kerry County Council are interested in giving it priority there is no point in raising the matter with me.

7.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ascertain if Kerry County Council have plans for the back-filling of the slobland off the quay behind Strand Street, Dingle, County Kerry in order to provide parking space and to build a new road or by-pass off Strand Street in order to relieve the traffic congestion.

In accordance with my policy of devolving responsibilities to local authorities, I arranged in 1973 that the planning and execution of works of the type mentioned by the Deputy would be entirely the responsibility of the county councils concerned. Kerry County Council will, I am sure, supply the Deputy with the information he requires in this instance.
