Vol. 283 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School at Finglas, Dublin.

21.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the urgent need for additional accommodation at St. Michael's Convent, Finglas, Dublin; and if he will state when this accommodation will be available.

Mr. R. Burke

I am aware of the need in this case and I hope that the contract will be placed at an early date. Tenders have already been received.

When Deputy O'Leary was speaking I thought he was referring to the school at Finglas except that the school at Finglas is much worse. Perhaps the Minister would visit this school and see the responsibility that hangs on his shoulders with regard to 150 girl students who are in a building that was built in the last century. A fire officer has disclaimed responsibility for the building and, in fact, it is liable to fall at any time.

Mr. R. Burke

The Deputy will appreciate that we have been in touch with the architects and it is hoped to have the matter finalised at the end of the week.

Will the Minister assure the people that as far as he is concerned it will be possible to proceed immediately with the provision of the additional accommodation?

Mr. R. Burke

The Deputy is asking me to give an undertaking over factors over which I have no control. I cannot give that undertaking, but we will obviate any unnecessary obstacles to the early building of the school. I am aware of the Deputy's previous representations to me in regard to this matter, and I agree the building needs to be replaced.
