Vol. 284 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Examination System.

7.

asked the Minister for Education if he will advise secondary schools that entrance examinations at these schools should be designed to assess the ability of a boy or girl with a view to developing that ability and not to encourage a system of elitism.

All pupils who have completed sixth class in the primary school, and who are 12 years of age or over on the 1st January of the school year, are eligible for enrolment in post-primary schools.

This position is well understood by the schools and no useful purpose would be served by issuing further advice as suggested.

8.

asked the Minister for Education if it is proposed to abolish the present examination system in first and second level schools; and, if so, when.

Mr. R. Burke

Since the abolition in 1967 of the primary schools' certificate examination, no examinations are prescribed by my Department for national schools. The abolition of the examination system in second-level schools is not in question.
