Vol. 284 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - LIS Allocation.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will increase the LIS allocation to Mayo County Council.

The available provision for the local improvements scheme in 1975 has already been fully allocated. No increase in the allocation to a particular local authority can arise except through underspending by other authorities. I cannot at present say whether any such underspending will occur this year.

Is the Minister aware there were special circumstances in Mayo due to a storm which damaged a number of bridges, and that it was found necessary to use a good deal of the Local Improvements Fund to reconstruct the bridges? In view of this, and the fact that the allocation has been very much reduced this year, would the Minister reconsider the position and try to make more money available?

I do not think there is any point in saying there will be more money available. I would hope the scheme will be restarted next year or the year after.
