Vol. 284 No. 5

Written Answers. - Donegal Fisheries Protection.

35.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has received a communication (details supplied) from the County Donegal Committee of Fisheries, together with a resolution advocating a more effective approach to the protection of the fisheries in the territorial waters off the Donegal coast; and if he intends taking any action in the matter.

I have received the communication and resolution in question.

The protection of our sea fisheries against unlawful entry and fishing by foreign fishing boats is a function of the Minister for Defence who, I understand, has also received a copy of the committee's communication. My information is that the sea area within the exclusive fishery limits of the State is patrolled by vessels of the Naval Service as frequently as possible having regard to the resources of the service.

The provision of heavier penalties for unlawful entry and fishing is being considered in my Department.
