Vol. 284 No. 5

Written Answers. - Foreign Trawler Poaching.

38.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will ensure that more efficient protection is given against poaching by foreign trawlers and that, when apprehended, these trawlers will be dealt with more effectively.

The protection of our sea fisheries against poaching by foreign fishing boats is a function of the Minister for Defence. My information in the matter is that the sea area within the exclusive fishery limits of the State is patrolled by vessels of the Naval Service as frequently as possible having regard to the resources of the service.

The provision of heavier penalties for unlawful entry and fishing by foreign fishing boats is being considered in my Department.
