Vol. 284 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Cork Industry.

80.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has any plans to provide industry in Buttevant, County Cork where further redundancy is imminent.

Buttevant is included in a town grouping with Rathluirc, Mitchelstown, Millstreet, Newmarket and Kanturk in the IDA Regional Plans 1973-77 for the southwest region and a gross manufacturing job creation target of 500 has been set for this town grouping in that period. The main thrust of the authority's effort in this grouping has been directed to supporting and encouraging industrial development in the larger neighbouring towns which are within commuting distance of Buttevant. The authority are, of course, ready to support any suitable project proposed for location at Buttevant.

I assume that the Deputy's reference to further redundancy relates to the proposed reduction of 20 in the workforce at the Ballybeg ground limestone quarry. I understand that half of the workers will be offered jobs for the remainder of this year by Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann at their Mallow factories.
